Our Mission
A Tradition of Giving
The Mission of the Muskegon Big Red Athletic Foundation is a simple one - to raise money and awareness of the athletic programs at Muskegon High School. It is an outlet meant to provide the "little things" that are missing in these days of budget cuts and tight purse strings.
We are a helping hand, designed to help carry on the rich tradition of MHS athletics.
History
Organized in 1980 by a group of dedicated Big Reds as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, donations to the foundation are tax deductible.
For many years, assistance came from the old "M" Club. Formed in 1925, the "M" Club recognized all sports but was especially active with the football program. By the 1970s, the club had faded from view and the Big Red Athletic Foundation was formed to fill the void. Still run by volunteers, the organization is built to complement and supplementall the programsof the athletic department. We work to meet the financial needs of Muskegon student-athletes and the district's coaches across all sports.
Today, the foundation helps the athletic department support both boys and girls teams in 26 sports at three levels. Capital comes from fundraisers, and donations from people like you who see the value in supporting Muskegon High School and the kids that make up the school's athletic teams.
The Tradition of Giving within the district dates back to Charles Hackley, who donated the property upon which Hackley Stadium is built. We work to keep that tradition alive.
Numerous individuals have been instrumental in the success of the organization over the years. Today, a mix of old and new leadership is carrying on the work of the organization’s founders.
The Big Red Athletic Foundation was formed in 1980 by Carol Potter, Brad Hart, and former Athletic Director, Larry Harp. Dozens of teachers, administrators, former athletes and followers of Big Red sports have ensured that survival and growth of the Foundations since that time. Each has contributed to our mission.
Members who have served the Foundation in various special capacities during the first quarter century include: Bob Page, Gar Fredricks, Ray Carlson, Anne Moore, Bob Ludwig, Eilene and Charles Nelson, Barb Wenk, James Cronan, Bob Hill, Duane VandenHeuvel, Don Fairfield, Tootie Rodgerson, Kim Stegall, Julie and Matt Kisosondi, Lynn Giles, T.L. Lowe, Charlie Taylor, as well as former Athletic Directors Tom McShannock, Dave Heckaman, Steve Hoffman, Mike Watson, Terri Clock and Keith Guy. We applaud their efforts, as well as the work done by their spouses and family members, who often labored behind the scenes at many Foundation meetings, fundraisers and gatherings.
In 2007, Christopher Ernvall (Class of 1986) took over the reigns of the organization from departing president Lynn Giles. With his untimely death, Brad Young (Class of 1972) was named president in 2009. Current president is Terri Clock.
